1997 – Save The Music Founded

MTV executive John Sykes started Save The Music Foundation after he was principal for a day at a school in Brooklyn and saw that the music program was at risk. Learn more about our approach.

1998 – Save The Music Becomes a National Non-Profit Organization

We became a national non-profit organization restoring public school music programs in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, New Orleans, and Las Vegas. We are currently in 42 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. See all granted districts on our impact map.

1999 – Save The Music Goes to Capitol Hill

We began meeting with Congressional leaders to push for laws that ensure accessibility and equality in music education for all children. Today, we continue to advocate on local, state, and national levels. Read our most recent blog about our visit to the capital.

2006 – First School Principals Workshop

We hosted our first grant-recipient principals’ workshop in New York City. To deepen our grassroots efforts, we now provide local program support and professional development to teachers, principals, superintendents and school administrators. Read our most recent blog on our teacher workshops.

2017 – Expansion to Electronic Music

At our 20th Anniversary celebration, we announced a new program that reflects how pop music is made today. The Music Tech grant supports high school programs for electronic music creation, recording and production – including DJ’ing, beat making, composition, audio engineering and production.
